Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur: Can You Do the Tea Plantations in a Day?

The short answer

Yes, it can be done in a day, but most of the day is in the vehicle. The Cameron Highlands Day Tour with Lunch costs €73.51 per person and is rated 4.3 stars from 1,509 reviews. The booking page says the total duration is about 12 hours and that the drive each way takes approximately 4 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. That leaves a few hours on the ground for farms, a market, lunch, a tea house and a waterfall stop on the way back.

The day, hour by hour

The tour runs on a fixed schedule: on weekdays it leaves at 7:00 am, and on weekends and public holidays at 6:00 am. Hotel pick-up is available from selected hotels and residences in the Golden Triangle area of Kuala Lumpur; the page lists areas without pick-up, including Pudu, and offers a meeting point at the Berjaya Times Square main entrance at 7:15 am on weekdays or 6:15 am on weekends and public holidays.

After the long drive, the itinerary lists a strawberry farm, the Agro Market and Floral Park, which the page describes with flower mounds, a cactus section, an aviary and “Mini Santorini”. Lunch is at a local restaurant, then a stop at Cameron Valley Tea House, listed at two hours, with tea-covered hills. The page says the exact plantation may vary with operational conditions. The Lata Iskandar Waterfall in Tapah is a 20-minute photo stop on the way back and, as the page warns, may be skipped because of weather, traffic or road conditions.

Check before you book

All of these are from the booking page. Traffic can be unpredictable, especially on weekends and public holidays, so the return to Kuala Lumpur may be later than scheduled. The operator does not recommend the tour for guests who have a flight arrival or departure on the same day. Attractions and their order may change. The tour is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users. A private option exists for up to 7 people. The short description says lunch and entrance fees are included; for drinks and personal expenses, check the booking page.

A better way to see the tea: stay overnight

If the tea plantations are the reason you want to go, a day trip gives you one tea house stop. A longer stay in the highlands lets you spend a morning there. The Mossy Forest Land Rover half-day tour shows what you can add. It costs €13.55 (4.6 stars from 263 reviews), runs 4 hours in a small group of up to 8, and visits the Mossy Forest Boardwalk, the BOH Sungei Palas Tea Plantation and a strawberry farm.

It starts in the Cameron Highlands, not in Kuala Lumpur: the page describes pick-up from hotels in Tanah Rata, Golden Hills, Brinchang or Kea Farm. So it works if you are already staying up there, not as a day trip from the capital. On Mondays the BOH café and factory are closed, and the tour goes to Cameron Valley Tea House instead. Baby strollers and large luggage are not allowed. One more check: a hiking guide (TAHAN Outdoor, July 2026) reports the Mossy Forest boardwalk closed since October 2025 after landslide damage, and we found no official reopening notice. Ask the operator before you book whether the boardwalk stop is running.

Getting there another way

If you would rather drive yourself and stay a night or two, you can compare rental cars for Kuala Lumpur. The tour page’s own figure of about 4 hours each way is the best guide we have for planning the drive; check the excess, deposit and fuel policy on the rental page, and set off early.

Which one

Choose the day tour if you have one free day, enjoy scenery and a farm-and-market stop, and can accept an early start and a long return. Skip it if you are short on time or flying out the same day. If you can add a night, stay in the highlands and book the Land Rover tour on the morning you are there. See more day trips from Kuala Lumpur: there are 86, from €7.96.
