Kuala Lumpur on Foot: Walking Tours of Merdeka Square, Chinatown and Little India
5 min read
The short answer
Old Kuala Lumpur is the part of the city where the walking tours work: they link Merdeka Square, the Central Market and Petaling Street in Chinatown on foot. Little India is a separate trip, in Brickfields. For a fixed three-hour route that starts on Merdeka Square, the Old Town Heritage Walking Tour is at €40.20 per person. One caution up front: these walking tours are small operations, and several have only a handful of reviews, so the review counts below are thin evidence compared with the bus and day-trip tours on this site.
The tours side by side
| Tour | Listed length | Starts at | Group |

| Old Town Heritage Walking Tour · €40.20 | 3 hours | Merdeka Square | Limited to 8 guests |
| Chinatown and Central Market · €33 | 3 hours | Lobby of Travelodge Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Jalan Hang Kasturi | Up to 11 people |

| Private Walking Tour with a Local · €43.06 | 2 to 6 hours | Pick-up listed, see below | Private, up to 6 people |
| Private Custom Walking Tour · €40 | 2 to 8 hours | Meet at your accommodation if it is in the city | Private group |
Merdeka Square to Chinatown
The Old Town Heritage tour lists the Central Market (a one-hour guided stop), the Guan Di Temple (30 minutes), the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (30 minutes, marked optional in the itinerary, although the includes list names the visit) and Petaling Street Market (30 minutes), plus one local snack. Two things on the page do not agree: the itinerary says it finishes at the Four Points by Sheraton in Chinatown, while the description says it ends near Masjid Jamek, where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet. Ask the operator where you will actually end up. The page carries a wheelchair-accessible label, so if that matters, confirm it with the operator first.
The Chinatown and Central Market tour is built around three one-hour blocks: Merdeka Square, the Central Market and Petaling Street, with an optional visit to REXKL. Its includes list shows a pass-by of Jamek Mosque rather than a visit. Wheelchair users are listed as not suitable.
Little India
Kuala Lumpur’s Little India is in Brickfields. The Masala Miles walk starts at the monorail station at KL Sentral and lists 14 tastings, two eateries that the page calls Michelin Bib Gourmand, a banana leaf meal, tea and filter-coffee pulling, and a visit to a Hindu temple. It is a food tour first, and the page lists people with food allergies as not suitable. Our street food guide compares other food tours.
Private walks
The private walk with a local is listed at 2 to 6 hours for up to 6 people, with an English-speaking guide, and the page describes it as unscripted rather than a set route. It lists pick-up as included, with two pick-up options. If you want to enter an attraction, the page says you also cover the guide’s entrance. Children under 3 are listed as free and children from 3 to 12 get 50% off.
The private custom walking tour lists guides in English, French, Spanish and Traditional Chinese, 2 to 8 hours, and a route you adjust to your wishes, for instance if you want a museum. The page lists hotel meet-up in the city and says car transport is not included; for tickets and food, ask what is covered. If you are travelling in French or Spanish, this is the one of the five that lists guides in those languages.
Which one?
Without a car and with half a day free, take the Old Town Heritage tour or the Chinatown and Central Market tour, and check the meeting point on the booking page: they do not start in the same place. For Brickfields, take the Little India food walk. For a family, a slow pace or your own interests, take one of the private tours. If walking in the heat does not appeal, the guided half-day city tour covers parts of the same area with transport. Temples and mosques set their own hours and dress rules, and we found no single official page for them, so ask your guide before the day. More choices are in the 123 city tours, from €8.64.
