Putrajaya from Kuala Lumpur: The Pink Mosque, a Lake Cruise and a Half Day

4 min read

Pink-domed Putra Mosque on the edge of a lake, with a small traditional boat on the water

The short answer

Putrajaya is Malaysia’s planned administrative capital, and it fits into a morning or an afternoon. The most reviewed way to see it is the Putrajaya Tour with Scenic Lake Boat Ride, at €25.32 per person, 4.5 stars from 544 reviews. It lasts 4 hours, and the page lists free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What the tour includes

The booking page calls Putrajaya the garden administrative capital and gives the drive from Kuala Lumpur as about 30 minutes in the header and the itinerary, and 40 minutes in the description, so allow either. The listed stops:

  • Putra Square (Dataran Putra) and the Perdana Putra building, where the Prime Minister’s office is
  • the Putra Mosque with its pink dome, which the page lists as a photo stop of about 30 minutes
  • a lake cruise on Putrajaya Lake, with views of bridges such as the Seri Wawasan Bridge
  • photo stops at the Palace of Justice, listed under the Mahkamah Persekutuan, and at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre
  • a drive through the government precincts

The inclusions name the boat cruise ticket, a visit to the mosque, an English-speaking driver-guide and an air-conditioned vehicle. The same list also names food and drinks, tips and optional activities so ask the operator which of these are in the price.

Meeting point, pick-up and who it does not suit

The booking page describes three formats. A private tour includes hotel pick-up and drop-off within 5 km of the Petronas Twin Towers. A shared tour picks up from hotels within 3 km of the towers and drops off at the towers. A shared meet-up starts and ends at the Twin Towers. The meeting-point text names Suria KLCC, at the Ramlee entrance, with the bus leaving promptly at 9:45 am and a maximum wait of 10 minutes; guests who arrive later are treated as no-shows. Driver details are sent via WhatsApp by 9:00 PM the day before, and because the shared tour pools several pick-ups, an early or late pick-up is possible.

The page lists children under 2 years as not suitable. It gives no dress rules, but the half-day tour below does for the same mosque: women in long sleeves, long trousers or a long skirt and a headscarf, men in long trousers, with robes provided on site when necessary. Follow that standard for either tour. We found no official page for the mosque’s visiting times, so ask the operator which time of day your tour reaches it and whether the mosque is open to visitors that day, since mosques can close to non-worshippers around prayer times.

The half-day alternative

The Putrajaya Half-Day Tour costs €31.06 (4.5 stars from 212 reviews). Its page says 4 hours, offered shared or private, with an optional English audio guide. According to the page, the lake cruise is at about 11:00 AM, the return starts at 1:00 PM and drop-off is around 1:30 PM, so it is a morning outing. It lists hotel pick-up in the Golden Triangle area and a cruise ticket for which infants are not permitted for safety reasons. Its stops are the cruise, the Putra Mosque, Perdana Putra and the Putra Bridge. Its page lists children under 3, wheelchair users and people prone to seasickness as not suitable. Compare the pick-up terms on both pages before choosing.

Is it worth a half day?

Putrajaya is made for looking, not for lingering: wide avenues, government buildings and a lake. If you like architecture, or you want a quiet contrast to the city centre, the half day is good value and easy to combine with a free afternoon. If you only have one day in Kuala Lumpur, spend it on the city itself with a city tour, and add Putrajaya on a second day. For more outings from the capital, see 86 day trips, from €7.96.
